Call to Worship

May the challenge of the gospel shape us.
May the truth of the gospel inspire us.
May the promise of the gospel encourage us.
May the urgency of the gospel compel us.
May the warnings of the gospel challenge our complacency.
May the Lord of the gospels rejoice with us
as we worship together in his name.

Amen.

Confession

God gave us the covenant of the law to guide us and help us live with our neighbours in love. When we break God’s law, we leave our neighbours hurt and bruised.

God’s law is a gift to us, showing us how to keep our part of the covenant.

Even through old pain and wounds, may we embrace the new life that Christ can bring.

Words of Assurance

May the God of the law guide us in living lives that keep the covenant of love.
May Christ’s forgiveness grant us new life, even when we break God’s law.
May the Holy Spirit of conviction lead us to confession and renewal.
May we respond in love to the God of covenant and change.

Amen.

Matthew 5:17-18

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Reflection

The whole of God’s Word speaks to us, the Old and the New Testament. Jesus is the fulfilment of what the prophets were preparing the people for. The prophets wrote of many things that resonates with us today. Namely, that our hope is in the promises of God who loves us and frees us from our suffering. And then restored and renewed, we become rooted in justice and faithfulness to the promises of God. When we live in this hope, we can help others see God’s presence in their lives.

A sending out prayer

Christ leads us out, back into his world,
to live by his word, and to reflect his light and love,
to be his fragrance in the days ahead.

Go with us always and guide us, good Lord.

Amen.
