Luke 24:13-19 On the Road to Emmaus

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”19 “What things?” he asked.“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.

Lord, in our world there is such a vast difference between those who have and those who have not: we pray that we would willingly share with others however little we think we have ourselves.

We pray for the physically hungry, that they might not only be filled, but be enabled to provide for themselves. Open our hearts, Lord, to help meet the needs of your people.

We pray for those who are hungry for love and affection, that you will keep them safe from harm. Open our hearts, Lord, to help meet the needs of your people.

We pray for those who are deprived of a roof over their head, that you will give them shelter. Open our hearts, Lord, to help meet the needs of your people.

We pray for all who are ill, and for all who care for them. Open our hearts, Lord, to help meet the needs of your people. Amen.

Lord, I don’t want to be jealous of my faith, hugging it closely to myself. I want to get out on the road of life and share it with all who cross my path. Help me, Lord. Amen.

Lord, you bring many people into our lives to walk along the road with us. We sit quietly now and think about some of the people we see each day, especially those we don’t always think the best of.
We pray for our parents, who love and care for us; those who teach us so much more than facts; our friends, who are there for us; our family, who see our worst side and still love us.

Amen.

A sending out prayer

Lord, today we have met with you on the road.
We pray that we will go out, newly aware of your presence with us, and with hearts open to everyone we meet on our journey through life.

Amen.
